Embroidered vs Printed Apparel: What Is the Difference?

You Can Do Hard Things Fleece Hoodie, photo 3

A design on clothing is either stitched in or printed on, and the difference shapes how the piece looks, feels and wears. Here is a clear guide to embroidered vs printed apparel, with examples from our own hoodie, cap and tees.

What is embroidery?

Embroidery uses thread stitched directly into the fabric. The design sits slightly raised, has a visible texture and tends to look premium. It suits simple shapes and lettering, and it works well on structured pieces like hoodies and caps.

What is printing?

Printing applies ink to the surface or into the fibers. Most of our tees use direct-to-garment printing, where an inkjet printer lays water-based ink onto the cotton. Printing handles full color, gradients and fine detail that thread cannot, and it feels flat and soft. We explain the process in what DTG printing is.

Examples from our shop

  • The You Can Do Hard Things fleece hoodie ($48.99) carries an embroidered message with a small anyway detail beneath it.
  • The dad cap ($29.99) is a classic, low-profile cap with a delicate floral design and a message about doing more of what makes you happy.
  • The Make It Happen tee ($33.99 to $37.99) is a printed design on a heavyweight garment-dyed cotton tee.

Which to choose

  • Choose embroidery for a hoodie, cap or jacket where you want texture and a polished look.
  • Choose printing for a tee when you want color, detail or a soft, flat feel.

Care tips

Wash both inside out in cold water and dry on low heat. The hoodie care label says machine wash cold (max 30C or 90F), do not bleach, tumble dry low and iron on low heat. Never press an iron directly on a print or embroidery. For tees, see our printed t-shirt care guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is embroidery more durable than print?

Stitched thread is very durable, but both last well with gentle care.

Does embroidery feel uncomfortable inside?

Quality embroidery is usually backed so the inside feels smooth, though it can feel slightly thicker than a printed area.

Which is better for a gift?

Embroidered pieces feel special. A printed tee is easier to match to a personality or a hobby.
