T-Shirt Weight Explained: What Do oz and GSM Mean?

Backpack Outline Graphic T-Shirt, photo 3

Product pages love to mention weight, but a number like 6.1 oz does not mean much until you can picture it. Weight tells you how heavy the fabric is, and that changes how a shirt feels, drapes and wears through the seasons. Here is a clear guide to t-shirt weight in oz and GSM, with real numbers from our shop.

What oz and GSM mean

Both are measures of fabric density. Ounces refers to the weight of a square yard of fabric (oz per square yard). GSM stands for grams per square meter. One ounce per square yard equals about 33.9 grams per square meter, so you can convert between the two by multiplying or dividing by about 34.

oz per sq yd Approx. GSM Example
4.2 oz About 142 GSM Our Bella+Canvas 3001 tees
6.1 oz About 207 GSM Our Comfort Colors 1717 tees
8.25 oz About 280 GSM Our fleece hoodie

Lightweight, midweight and heavyweight

There is no official standard, but a common rule of thumb looks like this:

  • Lightweight: up to about 5 oz (under 170 GSM). Airy, drapey and good in warm weather.
  • Midweight: about 5 to 6 oz (170 to 200 GSM). A balanced everyday tee.
  • Heavyweight: 6 oz and up (200 GSM and up). Substantial, structured and warmer.

How weight changes the way a tee wears

Feature Lighter fabric Heavier fabric
Feel Soft, airy Substantial, structured
Warmth Cooler Warmer
Drape Flowing, closer to the body Holds its shape, hangs straighter
Opacity Can be thinner More opaque
Best season Summer Autumn and winter layering

Our weights in practice

The Chunky Sneaker tee uses Bella+Canvas 3001, a lightweight 4.2 oz cotton tee. The Backpack Outline tee uses Comfort Colors 1717, a heavyweight 6.1 oz garment-dyed cotton tee. The You Can Do Hard Things hoodie is a medium-heavy 8.25 oz fleece. We compare the two tee blanks in Comfort Colors vs Bella+Canvas.

Weight is not the whole story

Yarn type, knit and finish also shape how a shirt feels. A lightweight tee made of ring-spun cotton can feel softer than a heavier tee made of coarser yarn. We explain the yarn side in what ring-spun cotton is, and the finish in garment-dyed vs regular cotton t-shirts.

How to choose by season

For summer, pick a lightweight tee. For autumn layering and a more structured look, pick a heavyweight tee. Our guide to styling a graphic t-shirt in every season shows outfit ideas for both.

Frequently asked questions

What does GSM mean on a t-shirt?

Grams per square meter. It is a measure of fabric weight, like ounces per square yard.

Is a heavier t-shirt better?

Not always. Heavier tees feel substantial and warm, while lighter tees breathe better. It depends on the season and your taste.

Do heavier shirts shrink less?

Not necessarily. Shrinkage depends more on the fiber and how you wash it. See do cotton t-shirts shrink?
