If you have ever wondered why one t-shirt feels silky and another feels like a paper towel, a lot of the answer is in the yarn. Ring-spun cotton is one of the most common reasons a tee feels soft, and you will see the phrase on plenty of product pages, including ours. Here is what it means, how it differs from other cotton, and what it changes for the shirt you wear.

What is ring-spun cotton?
Cotton is spun into yarn before it is knitted into fabric. In ring spinning, the fibers are continuously twisted and thinned on a spinning frame, which produces a finer, smoother and stronger yarn. The tighter, more even yarn is what makes ring-spun fabric feel soft against the skin.
Ring-spun vs open-end vs combed cotton
| Term | What it means | What you notice |
|---|---|---|
| Ring-spun | Fibers are twisted and thinned into a fine, strong yarn | A softer, smoother feel |
| Open-end (rotor) spun | Fibers are spun faster into a bulkier yarn | Often rougher and less fine, common in budget tees |
| Combed | Short fibers are combed out before spinning | A smoother, more uniform yarn |
| Combed and ring-spun | Both steps together | Typically among the softest cotton tees |
Why it matters for a t-shirt
- Softer feel. Finer yarn makes a smoother fabric against the skin.
- A smoother surface. A smooth fabric tends to show detailed prints crisply.
- Durability. Finer, stronger yarn generally holds up well to regular wear and washing.
- A cost trade-off. Ring spinning and combing take more time and material, so these tees usually cost more to make than basic open-end cotton.
What it means in our shop
Both of the blanks we use are ring-spun. The Comfort Colors 1717 tees are listed as 100% ring-spun US cotton, and the Bella+Canvas 3001 tees are listed as 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton. Airlume is the brand’s name for its combed and ring-spun cotton. Even with similar yarn, the two feel different because weight, construction and finish also matter: Comfort Colors 1717 is a 6.1 oz garment-dyed heavyweight, and Bella+Canvas 3001 is a 4.2 oz lightweight. We compare them side by side in Comfort Colors vs Bella+Canvas.

How to spot it when you shop
- Read the fabric line. Look for the words ring-spun or combed in the product description.
- Check the weight. Ounces per square yard tell you how substantial the fabric is, which affects feel as much as yarn does.
- Look at the finish. A garment-dyed tee feels different from a standard one even when the yarn is the same. We explain why in garment-dyed vs regular cotton t-shirts.
Does ring-spun cotton shrink?
It can, like any cotton, especially with hot water and a hot dryer. Cold washing and gentle drying keep it to a minimum. Our post Do cotton t-shirts shrink? covers it in detail.
Caring for ring-spun tees
Wash cold, turn the shirt inside out and dry on low heat or air dry. The full routine is in our guide to washing printed t-shirts.
Frequently asked questions
Is ring-spun cotton better than regular cotton?
For softness and a smooth feel, usually yes, though weight, knit and finish matter just as much to how a shirt actually feels.
Is combed cotton the same as ring-spun?
No. Combed describes removing short fibers before spinning, while ring-spun describes how the yarn is spun. Many tees are both.
Does ring-spun mean organic?
No. Ring-spinning is a spinning method and says nothing about how the cotton was grown.
Is it worth paying more for?
If you wear a shirt often, the softer feel and durability usually justify it.
