A new sticker looks great for about five seconds, until a bubble, a crooked edge or a bit of dust ruins it. The good news is that applying a sticker well is easy once you know a few simple steps. This guide shows how to apply a sticker without bubbles, how to remove one cleanly and how to make your stickers last for years.
Before you start: choose the right surface
Stickers stick best to smooth, clean, non-porous surfaces such as laptops, water bottles, phone cases, journals with a glossy cover, helmets and glass. They do not hold well on rough, dusty, wet or heavily textured surfaces such as raw wood, fabric or brick. If you are not sure, test with a small corner first.
Our kiss-cut vs die-cut stickers guide explains how the two cut styles differ, and our creative ways to use stickers post has plenty of ideas for where to put them.
What you will need
- Your sticker, such as the Oh My Day Tiny Wins sticker
- A clean, lint free cloth
- A little isopropyl alcohol or mild soap and water
- A credit card or a soft plastic scraper
- A small pin for stubborn air bubbles
Step by step: how to apply a sticker without bubbles
1. Clean the surface
Wipe the area with a cloth and a little alcohol or soapy water. Let it dry completely. Dust and finger oils are the number one reason stickers peel or bubble.
2. Plan the position
Hold the sticker over the spot without removing the backing. Step back and check the angle. For a group of stickers, arrange them on a table first, then copy the layout. Light pencil marks or a piece of masking tape can mark the center line.
3. Peel back one edge
Peel back only a small part of the backing paper. Kiss-cut stickers, such as the Oh My Day Take It Easy sticker, come on a backing sheet, so you can lift the sticker from the sheet with a fingernail at one corner.
4. Press from the center out
Place the exposed edge on the surface and slowly press it down with a credit card, working from the center toward the edges. This pushes air out instead of trapping it. Take your time and avoid creases.

5. Fix any bubbles
If a bubble appears, try pressing it toward the nearest edge with your finger. For a stubborn bubble, make a tiny hole with a pin and press the air out. The hole will be almost invisible.
6. Let it cure
Wait at least 24 hours before washing, wetting or rubbing the sticker. The adhesive needs time to bond, and a cured sticker lasts far longer.
How to remove a sticker without leaving residue
Sooner or later you may want to change your layout. To remove a sticker, warm it gently with a hairdryer for 30 seconds, which softens the adhesive. Peel slowly from one corner at a low angle. If glue is left behind, rub it with a little cooking oil or isopropyl alcohol on a cloth, then wash the area with soapy water. Never use a sharp blade on a screen or painted surface.
How to make stickers last longer
- Avoid harsh heat. Leaving a bottle in a hot car can soften the glue.
- Hand wash bottles. A dishwasher can lift sticker edges.
- Do not scrub. Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth.
- Keep spares. Store unused stickers flat and away from sunlight.
Where to stick your stickers
Laptops are the classic choice, but stickers also work on a planner cover, a phone case, a water bottle, a lunch box or a desk.
