Yes, cotton t-shirts can shrink, and most of it tends to happen in the first wash or two, especially when heat is involved. The good news is that you control a lot of it. Here is why cotton t-shirts shrink, how to wash and dry them to limit it, and how to pick a size that still fits after laundry day.

Why cotton shrinks
Cotton fibers get stretched during knitting and finishing. Heat and agitation let them relax back toward their natural length, and the fabric tightens. That is why hot water and a hot dryer are the biggest culprits, and why the first wash is when you notice the change most.
What pre-shrunk really means
Pre-shrunk fabric has been treated to reduce shrinkage before the shirt is made. It helps, but it does not make a shirt immune, so careful washing still matters. On our product pages, the Comfort Colors 1717 tees are listed as pre-shrunk. The Bella+Canvas 3001 listing does not make that claim, so treat those tees gently from the first wash. We compare the two blanks in Comfort Colors vs Bella+Canvas.
How to wash and dry to limit shrinking
- Wash cold. Our care labels list a cold machine wash, up to 30C or 90F.
- Use a gentle cycle. Less agitation means less stress on the fibers.
- Turn the shirt inside out. It also protects the print.
- Go easy on the dryer. Tumble dry on low heat, or air dry. If you use a dryer, take the shirt out while it is still slightly damp.
- Skip bleach and hot cycles. Both are harsh on cotton and on prints.
- Follow the care label. It is written for that exact shirt.
How your habits affect shrinkage
| Wash and dry routine | Shrink risk |
|---|---|
| Hot wash, hot dryer | Highest |
| Warm wash, medium dryer | Moderate |
| Cold wash, low-heat dryer | Low |
| Cold wash, air dry | Lowest |

How to size so it still fits
- Measure a shirt you already love. Lay it flat and measure the chest width and length, then compare with the Size Guide.
- Decide on the fit you want. A relaxed cut has room to spare, while a slim cut leaves less. Our post on how to choose t-shirt size walks through it.
- Think about how you wash. If you often use warm water and a hot dryer, the larger size is the safer choice. If you wash cold and dry gently, you can size closer to your measurements.
Because every shirt is made to order, we cannot accept returns for a wrong size, so it is worth measuring before you buy. The details are in our Returns policy.
What to do if a shirt already shrank
Results vary, but you can try this: soak the shirt in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent or hair conditioner for 10 to 15 minutes, press out the water without wringing, lay it flat and gently ease the fabric back toward its shape as it dries. Avoid stretching the area under the print, which can crack the design.
Frequently asked questions
Do all cotton t-shirts shrink?
Most cotton tees can tighten a little, but how much depends on the fabric, how it was made and how you wash and dry it. Heat is the main factor.
Does garment-dyed cotton shrink more?
Not inherently. Shrinkage depends more on the fiber and the wash temperature than on the dyeing method. We cover the differences in garment-dyed vs regular cotton t-shirts.
How much will my t-shirt shrink?
There is no single number. A cold wash and a gentle dry keep it to a minimum, and a hot wash with a hot dryer maximizes it.
Is it safe to tumble dry a printed t-shirt?
On low heat, yes, as our care labels list. Hanging it to dry is gentler still. Our printed t-shirt care guide has the full routine.
