11 oz vs 15 oz Mug: Which Size Should You Choose?
The two most common ceramic mug sizes are 11 oz and 15 oz. They look similar on a shelf, but they behave differently in your hand and in your morning routine. Here is how to choose between an 11 oz vs 15 oz mug, with real numbers and a few rules of thumb.
How much does each size hold?
| Size | Millilitres | US cups | Feels like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 oz | About 325 ml | About 1.4 cups | A classic coffee mug |
| 15 oz | About 444 ml | About 1.9 cups | A big mug that holds two small cups |
A US cup is 8 fluid ounces, so an 11 oz mug holds a little over a cup and a half. Remember that you rarely fill a mug to the brim, so the usable amount is a bit lower.
Which size for which drink
- Black coffee: 11 oz is plenty and keeps the drink hot until the last sip.
- Tea: 15 oz gives room for a bag to steep and a splash of milk.
- Latte or cocoa: 15 oz fits the milk and the foam or whipped cream.
- Soup in a mug: 15 oz is the practical choice.

How to decide
- Think about your usual drink. If you drink coffee in small amounts, choose 11 oz.
- Think about refills. If you do not like getting up, choose 15 oz.
- Think about your desk. A 15 oz mug is taller and wider, which matters on a small desk.
- Think about gifting. 11 oz is the safe default. 15 oz is a treat for a tea or cocoa fan.
